Welcome to Cal Spirit of Las Vegas
Cal Spirit of Las Vegas is the local alumni organization of the University of California, Berkeley in southern Nevada and is affiliated with the 95,000-member California Alumni Association. There are approximately 2,100 Cal alumni residing in southern Nevada, which was founded in September 2005 by UNLV Prof. Dan Asera, president of the Class of 1969 and a California Alumni Scholar.
Las Vegas Bowl ▪ In December 2005, Cal was invited to the Las Vegas Bowl and members of our group assisted with some of the local planning for this special occasion when over 10,000 Cal alumni traveled to Las Vegas. Several events were held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, the Pac-10 host hotel.
Events and Activities ▪ Each year Cal alumni gather on several occasions – as a scholarship selection committee to award leadership and scholarship awards to Nevada high school students who have been admitted to Cal; to attend Cal football viewing parties at local sports bars and to enjoy the fellowship of fellow alumni; to participate in an annual reception in April to recognize local high school students recently admitted to Cal; to attend award ceremonies in recognition of outstanding alumni in the area; and to participate in various cultural and educational events for the benefit of our alumni and prospective students.
Pulitzer Prize Awarded to Local Cal Alumna ▪ Alexandra Berzon, an alumna of the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism in 2006 and an investigative reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize awarded for her series of articles on the high death rate of construction workers on the Las Vegas Strip. Nevada VIPs ▪ Prominent local alumni and supporters include Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall, a Cal undergraduate and Boalt Hall School of Law alumna; and former UNLV President David Ashley who was executive vice chancellor of U.C. Merced and a Cal Engineering professor before coming to UNLV. Both were guest speakers at our 2008 New Admits Reception held at UNLV Thomas & Mack Center.
